The Avery County Board of Education has named Human Resources Director Ken Townsend to be the new Superintendent of Avery County Schools.

According to the Avery Journal, the board announced the promotion at the February 7th meeting.

Townsend graduated from Appalachian State in 1988 and was a teacher in the school system as well as a coach. After getting his Masters, he became principal at Beech Mountain Elementary for two years before serving a five-year term at Banner Elk Elementary School. Then six years as Executive Director of Human Resources.

Townsend will succeed David Burleson who retires in July.
