Building Emergency Team members from nine facilities on the Appalachian State University campus met with first responders from University Police and the Boone Fire Department on Thursday, Sept. 7, in the Parkway Ballroom of Plemmons Student Union.

The meeting allowed campus emergency team members and first responders to get to know one another and to offer the chance for safety leaders in the community to provide useful information in case of an emergency.

Debi Trivette and Jason Marshburn of Appalachian’s Environmental Health, Safety and Emergency Management (EHSEM) department, were joined by Mike Teague, assistant chief of the Boone Fire Department and Capt. Johnny Brown of Appalachian’s University Police.

In addition, Adam Jones, building coordinator for Belk Library and Information Commons, spoke about a small fire that occurred in the library in March. Due to the quick action of the library staff, over 100 people were evacuated from the library in nine minutes.

The new chief of University Police, Andy Stephenson, introduced himself and thanked everyone for being part of the safety team on campus.
