The town of Banner Elk and Ensemble Stage have entered a partnership that will allow Ensemble Stage to move its operations and performances from Blowing Rock to a permanent home at the Historic Banner Elk School.
The arrangement becomes effective February 1st, and will allow Ensemble Stage to convert the school’s gymnasium to provide year round quality theatre to residents and guests in the High Country and improve the service and experience to audiences. The first Summer Professional Season in the new space will run from June to September, followed by an expanded Fall and Winter season.
Ensemble Stage Artistic Director Gary Smith said he'd like to thank "all of our patrons, donors and businesses that have supported us since our first production in October of 2009. We hope you are excited about this wonderful opportunity for increased stability and growth, and will continue to come to our shows and support our mission as we enter this next chapter in our story."
The Banner Elk Town Council voted unanimously to partner with the professional theatre group. The Historic Banner Elk School gym will be turned into a 99-seat theatre and will include a physical box office, concessions, and lobby. Five classrooms will become spaces for a scene shop, rehearsal room, green room, dressing rooms, prop and costume storage. There will also be handicapped accessibility and ample public parking adjacent to the building.
