Math Camp July 13 to 16
ASU’s Department of Mathematical Sciences will sponsor Math Camp from
Monday, July 13, to Thursday, July 16, for rising 6th- through 12th-graders.
This is the 12th year that this popular summer enrichment camp has been
offered. Math Camp will meet from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. in Walker Hall on campus.
Registration is $120. This camp is designed to actively engage students in
mathematics. Students who love math, fear math, hate math, excel at math and/or
need help with math are all welcome and encouraged to attend. Dr. Anita
Kitchens, director of Math Camp, is a professor in the ASU Department of
Mathematics and author of the book

In early July we will have the return of our "Building Blocks" or "Legos"
Show. For this exhibit, children and adults are asked to bring creations that
they have made from any building toy such as Legos, Erector sets, Lincoln Logs,
Kinet-X/Magnet-X, etc. Delivery dates are June 30-July 1 from 9am-5pm, and they
will remain on display through July 17th.
The Caldwell Arts Council will also be offering an array of
one-day and week-long art classes for children and adults. Everything from face
jugs and beading jewelry to harmonica lessons and watercolor painting to origami
and book art, collage and pottery.

Celebrate the 4th of July at the Jones
House Community Center in downtown Boone!
At 1 p.m. the summer interns of the Blowing Rock Stage
Company will perform “Jack in the Park” an adaptation of Jack Tales. Following this interpretation of these
traditional mountain stories, Watauga County’s own Orville Hicks will give his
rendition of Jack Tales in his own special style. He will also be on hand to sign copies of his
books, Mountain Stories~Mountain Roots and Jack Tales and Mountain
Yarns as told to Julia Taylor
Ebel.
The Watauga Community Band will play patriotic bands
beginning at 2 p.m. and until the parade starts at 3 p.m.
In the tradition of true Americana, plenty of watermelons will be
served for everyone to enjoy.
Everyone is invited to go inside the Jones House
throughout the afternoon to look at the Watauga Arts Council gallery exhibits
and to tour this 101 year old house.
The WAC’s offices and galleries are located in
downtown Boone at the Jones House Community & Cultural Center, owned by the
town of Boone.

The Boone’s Biggest Loser League is a 12-week program presented by the Appalachian Regional Healthcare System to promote weight loss and healthy lifestyles.
The program will be held at the Paul Broyhill Wellness Center every Tues. & Wed. from 5:30 - 7 p.m. starting May 26th & 27th.
Participants can choose from one of two tracts.
Wednesday class: Team Downsize, a group led by Paul Moore, Registered Dietitian and Assistant Manager of the Paul Broyhill Wellness Center will follow the “small steps equals big changes” philosophy of learning how to modify existing behaviors to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle. Wednesdays.
Tuesday class: Team Vitality, led by Susan Bacot, Behavior Change Specialist, will focus on significant changes that can be made in nutrition & exercise to become healthier.

Dr. Lynn Siefferman will teach participants how to spot beautiful local birds, including the Eastern Bluebird, and she will also explain how to attract these birds to your own backyards.
Dr. Siefferman is a biologist at Appalachian State University, and is an expert on the Eastern Bluebird. Her research focuses primarily on plumage coloration in the Eastern Bluebird.
The tour will take place at Appalachian State University’s Sustainable Development Farm, and the group will meet in the parking lot of Earthfare at 7:45 am to carpool.
Cost is $15 for PACT members and $25 for non-members. All proceeds will benefit PACT, the local chapter of the North Carolina Wildlife Federation.

There will be a picnic at the Valle Crucis Park from 10 AM - 2 PM ($2/person, ok to pay on-site) and an event at the Broyhill Inn 7 PM - 11 PM ($25/person through June 15, $30/person through July 10). "Sermon on the Mount" Benefit Softball Tournament

| The purpose of the benefit softball tournament is to raise money to bring "Sermon on the Mount" event to the High Country. There will be open and recreational divisions. Three game guarantee. USSSA bats allowed. 44 cor/400 compression balls. Entry fee $190.00 per team. Deadline for registration is July 16 at 12:00 pm. The purpose of "Sermon on the Mount" is to help people understand how healthy relationships develop and how they can experience harmony and success in their own lives. "Sermon on the Mount" uses horses to illustrate biblical principles to demonstrate loving, successfull horse and trainer interaction. "Sermon on the Mount" will be at Blowing Rock Equestrian Center on August 14-15. |
