ASU and Boone still at odds over Education Building PDF Print

Appalachian State University and the Town of Boone are still battling it out over the location of the new education building.

ASU wants the building near the Baptist Church in downtown Boone. There’s just one problem, however- the property is in an R-3 zoned neighborhood- and the building plans are just too large for the location- at least, that’s what Mayor Loretta Clawson has said. President of the ASU Board of Trustees Jim Deal feels differently.

It's not in a neighborhood, he says. Surrounded by ASU and churches, the location near only one residence.

Nevertheless- it is zoned R-3.

"It's zoned incorrectly," Deal said. To say it is zoned for multi-family use is to fail to recognize how the property is actually used, he said.

The nearby parking deck is another reason the location is ideal. When school systems come to the College of Education and participate in programs- there needs to be a place to park, Deal says.

While there other locations are available- they do not fit the needs of the Education Building, Deal says. He hopes to work something out with the town in the near future.
