More graves possible at High School site PDF Print

Graves discovered at the site for the new Watauga High School are being relocated to Mt. Lawn Memorial Park.

As of Friday, 19 graves had been moved out of an estimated 25. Family members have been present throughout the entire process, according to County Manager Rocky Nelson. In fact, thanks to their research, more graves may be found. The family has reason to believe another gravesite exists on the property. Nelson authorized a geologist to examine the possibility, and reserved additional space at Mt. Lawn- just in case.

According to Nelson, the County is making an effort to be respectful of the remains.

Most of the remains found so far have been those of children. No new gravesites have been found- but geologists are examining the scene. Additionally, if a grave is discovered during construction, a geologist is on standby, Nelson said. The High School construction could kick off on September 7.
