A Catawba County man has died from wounds suffered from a roadside bomb that exploded in Iraq.

The statement released by the military yesterday identified the man as 24-year-old Darryl Wardlaw “Ward” Lindler. Lindler was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat team of Fort Hood, Texas.

Lindler joined the Marine Corps in 2001 and served in Afghanistan. After working for his father briefly, he enlisted in the Army. Lindler was deployed to Iraq in January. He is survived by his 3-year-old son, Kyle.

Lindler graduated Fred T. Foard High School where he excelled in football and baseball. His hobbies included hunting, camping and fishing.

Lindler was due home on leave next month.
