The Watauga County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning regarding a new credit card scam. This scam involves a telephone caller representing themselves as being from the Visa or Mastercard Security investigation division. They will say they are researching a suspicious charge on your card. They will not ask for your credit card number; they will ask you to read the 3 digit Security PIN number off of the back of your card. This pin number enables someone who already has your credit card number to use it for purchases on the phone or online. Do not under any circumstances give someone the 3-digit pin number off of the back of your card under these circumstances. If you receive such a call, tell them you will call Visa or Mastercard directly for verification. Call your credit card company and follow their instructions.
