A man is in Caldwell County custody after opening fire on a Caldwell County sheriff’s deputy. 58-year-old Dewey George Rawls of Hickory was arrested after allegedly firing multiple rounds at Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office’s Lora Cobb following an apparent domestic dispute at his home.

The dispute was reported around 11:45 p.m. off Grace Chapel Road. Upon Cobb’s arrival she found Rawls leaving the site in a minivan at a high rate of speed, driving without headlights. When Cobb attempted to stop the vehicle on Gold Creek Bay, it pulled away onto Dockside Drive. As Cobb pursued in her patrol car, Rawls stopped his vehicle suddenly, exited, and opened fire with a handgun. Although Cobb returned fire, neither she nor Rawls were shot. After his gun malfunctioned, two officers who arrived on-scene were able to apprehend him around 12:15. According to Caldwell sheriff’s statements, Rawls was treated at Caldwell Memorial, but for injuries he sustained during the dispute prior to the shooting incident. He was bitten by the family’s Doberman pinscher, which Rawls allegedly killed during the dispute. Alcohol may have been involved. Rawls was issued several charges including attempted first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon on a government officer.
