Watauga law enforcement officers have started their trek, Special Olympics torch in tow, to the Green Park Inn, where waiting Caldwell officers will take over around noon.

Blowing Rock Police Officer Chad Wilcox was "excited" to participate in the seven mile run. Years past, starting points have been Watauga County High School and the Fairfield Inn. No word on whether starting at the Boone Police Department will make the journey any easier.

Cops had company on their run today. Five athletes from the team of 32 that will be competing at the Summer Games joined officers, as well as Boone Mayor Loretta Clawson. While Clawson did not plan on running all the way to the Green Park, it was a cause she believed in enough to take it as far as she could.

Participating was the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office, Watauga Medical Center Police Department, Boone Police Department, ASU Police Department, and Blowing Rock Police Department. All departments involved received plaques in appreciation for their service.

Stay tuned to your radio and this website for up-to-date information on the torch's progress.
