The High Country is gearing up for the season, with a Christmas expo and the first holiday parade in the area taking place this weekend. Also, for those wanting to get out for some high-quality entertainment there are several award-winning performers in the area.
Here's what's happening in the High Country this weekend:
Freedom Farm Ministries Thrift Store Grand Opening

Savion Glover's STePZ
Friday, 8 pm
Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts, Appalachian State University, Boone
Appalachian's Performing Arts Series presents Savion Glover's STePZ. In this production, Glover and his ensemble of dancers take tap dance to new heights and levels while fusing traditional music of the past with his self-proclaimed tap style and energy of the future.

Greenway Baptist Church, 880 Greenway Rd., Boone
The Child Development Center of Greenway Baptist Church will be hosting a "one-stop-shop" for Christmas shoppers. In addition to vendors, there will be food and a visit from Santa. All proceeds benefit the Greenway Baptist Church Child Development Center to provide necessary classroom supplies and local families in need. Admission is $3 for adults or an equal amount of non-perishable food items to be donated to the food pantry.

Appalachian Brian Estates, 163 Shadowline Drive, Boone
Kiwanis of Boone presents their annual spaghetti dinner at Appalachian Brian Estates. The cost is $6 for adults, $4 for children under 12, $3 for veterans. Tickets can be purchased from any member of Kiwanis of Boone or at the door.
Annual Downtown West Jefferson Holiday Parade
Saturday, Noon - 2 pm
Downtown West Jefferson, NC
Ashe County Chamber of Commerce presents the first holiday parade of the season Saturday. The event will feature the Ashe County High School band and Santa on an antique fire engine. For more information, call (336) 846-9550.
Jamie Laval Concert

One of the premier Celtic violinists on the international music scene today, Jamie Laval creates rapt audiences with his intensely passionate performances of traditional music of Scotland, Ireland, Brittany and Quebec, rendered with hints of classical refinement and ethnic music from around the world.

Boone Moose Lodge 1805, 607 Deerfield Road, Boone
The Women of the Moose Lodge 1805 present a buffet breakfast Saturday with a menu consist ing of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy, grits and a selection of juices and coffee. The price is $8. Proceeds will benefit children from displaced homes in Chicago and seniors in Orange Park, Fla.

The Boone American Legion is hosting their monthly All-You-Can-Eat Country Breakfast Buffet Saturday. Open to the public, proceeds benefit Veterans programs in the High Country. The cost is $8.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a covered dish to share and donate canned goods for the hungry.
