Fire units from Deep Gap aided the Champion Fire Department and other Wilkes units in battling a fire that spread from a structure into woods nearby late yesterday. Several Wilkes County departments arrived at the scene at 100 Staghorn Drive and began the task of dealing with the burning structure while evening winds whipped the fire into nearby woods.  Deep Gap dispatched a number of units to the scene to help battle the fires.

As that fire was being put out, Shepherds Crossroads firemen, backed by other Wilkes departments, battled a blaze that destroyed a family’s home in the Roaring River area. Damage was extensive to the 4544 Green Horn Rd., Shepherd Crossroads address, with the Red Cross called in late last night to assist a family of three adults and one child providing food, clothes, a storage container for goods salvaged from the fire, then helped them with finding a place to stay.
