Two Life Terms in 'Facebook' Murders PDF Print

Two consecutive life sentences were handed down in a Mountain City court Tuesday in the case of Marvin Potter Jr., charged in the shooting deaths of two people, a double murder spurred by an Internet snub. Billy Payne Jr. 36, and Billie Jean Hayworth, 23, were killed in their home on Jan. 31, 2012, and now Potter, 61, has been sentenced in the case that has been called the Facebook Murders. The Johnson City Press said that Judge Jon Kerry Blackwood said in court that Potter showed a “shocking disregard for human life” by the act, including shooting Hayworth while she was holding the couple’s 6-month old baby in her arms, killing the woman and leaving “the child to its fate.” Family members of the victims’ families took the witness stand to address Potter before the sentence was handed down. Three others are yet to stand trial in the murders, said to have been precipitated by Hayworth ‘unfriending’ Potter’s daughter on Facebook.
