Snow, Ice, Slick Roads, Avery School Delays PDF Print

An accumulation of snow hit the High Country overnight, accompanied by a mix of other precipitation, causing slick roads and school delays. The slick road conditions led to a rollover wreck on US 421 just behind the Deep Gap Fire Department near Brownwood Road at about 6:15 this morning, but the woman who emerged from the overturned vehicle reported that she was not hurt. A 7:15am wreck was reported on Brookshire Road on that end of town, and slick conditions were reported closer in to Boone on 421 at the Bamboo Road intersection, as well as on 321 in front of Mystery Hill.  Avery County reported that folks first out in the predawn hours found black ice in many areas, and schools were delayed there two hours for students and staff. Ashe County schools already had the day off for a teacher’s work day, but there was an early accident on US 221 North above Jefferson that occurred when a motorist had to dodge a deer, then found the road too slick to recover and ran off of the road. US 221south at the twin bridges over the New River were also slick as more cold air moved in as clouds moved out.
