Blowing Rock Police are offering advice for the many seasonal residents who will soon be leaving Blowing Rock and other High Country communities to spend the winter in warmer climates. Police say that before leaving your summer homes there are some things that you can do to help keep your property safe.

  • They say installing an alarm system is the best way to keep your home protected from theft and fire.
  • Have a caretaker for your home and make sure that your alarm monitoring company has accurate contact information for that person.
  • Let trusted neighbors know when your plan to leave and return and notify them if guest will be using your home.
  • Make sure that mail is forwarded and forward or discontinue newspaper subscriptions.
  • Make your home a hard target for thieves by installing dead bolt locks and perimeter lighting.

Providing the Police or Sheriff’s Department with your emergency contact information and the dates that home will be vacant is very helpful for agencies that might have to deal with issues with your property.
