Fire Damages Western Watauga Home PDF Print

A lightning strike led to a fire that damaged a Cove Creek area home yesterday evening.  The call came in just after 6:30 as a line of thunderstorms dropped heavy rain and lit the sky with lightning, one of those bolts striking a two-story cabin listing a 185 Grand Creek Road, Vilas address. Owners of the cabin from Miami were staying there this week, and were at home at the time, and witnessed the strike, the electrical circuits taken out, and then the smell of smoke.  Arriving Cove Creek firefighters saw smoke, then found an outlet on fire and fire in the floor between the basement and main level.  They managed to knock down the fire in short order and save the cabin, but the Red Cross had to be called in to help the family find a place to stay as the power had to be disconnected by BREMCO, and some rewiring will be required before anyone can occupy the structure.  The Chief of Cove Creek said that the family was fortunate that they were there, were not injured, and that the main loss in the fire was smoke damage.
