Aldermen Reverse Vote on WJ Antiques Fair PDF Print

West Jefferson’s new, highly anticipated, proposed sign regulation policy was on the agenda for Monday night’s Aldermen meeting, but with the absence of mayor, Dale Baldwin, and Alderman, Stephen Shoemaker, the topic was delayed until next month’s meeting. Alderman, Lester Mullis, made the motion to postpone the discussion stating he felt the issue was too important to act on without full participation of the elected officials. There was full agreement among the other Aldermen present who voted unanimously in favor of Mr. Mullis’ motion. However, on another topic that has proven to be tricky for the Aldermen there was no hesitation in taking action to reverse a previous decision. The Antique Fair, scheduled for September, has proven to be an event with which the Aldermen have had difficulty finding a proper balance between promoting the Town while not negatively impacting the merchants. Alderman Mullis asked for the topic to be placed on the agenda after hearing from several merchants that the location the Alderman had approved for the vendors would negatively impact their businesses, “I think we need to revisit this and do a little bit more study on this.” After some discussion Alderman, Tom Hartman, motioned that they resend last month’s approval and bring the event’s planner back for the purpose of finding a better location for the event, “If there’s a location that we can use with less disruption for the town merchants we need to consider that.” His motion carried unanimously.
