Thanks to WAMY, Avery County has a new invention that may be perfect for your child.4-H is combining with the 21st Century Learning Center and the SOS (Support Our Students) Program to provide the ultimate after school community. It’s called Avery YO!, and it’s a great opportunity for Avery kids, Bobbie Willard says.
The program targets kindergarten through eighth grade students, and caters to their individual needs. Activities include homework assistance and field trips. There’s even a feature that helps enhance End of Grade test scores for at-risk students. While there is a fee, parents can apply for a subsidy. Middle school students get the program for free. All the schools are participating in the program. Transportation is even available.
The response so far has been overwhelming. There's a great need in the community, WIllard says.
While the deadline was technically last week- there is still time to sign up. Parents can request information from the school their child attends. Paperwork needs to be in before a child can participate.WAMY Community Action, Inc. is a private non-profit organization that provides services, awareness, solutions, and empowerment for individuals and families from disadvantaged circumstances in Watauga, Avery, Mitchell and Yancey Counties.
