Mattel announces recall: Barbies, Polly Pockets, Batman PDF Print
Tuesday, 14 August 2007 05:55

Lead paint and magnet issues led Mattel to recall more than 9 million toys today.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, magnets can come loose and be swallowed in more than 7 million Polly Pocket toys, 680,000 Barbie and Tanner sets, 1 million Doggie Daycare sets and 350,000 Batman figures. Surface paint on 250,000 Sarge cars from the movie Cars has also been added to the recall list due to the risk of lead poisoning. The recall comes just a few weeks after Mattel recalled one million other products, including the popular Dora the Explorer after excessive amounts of lead were found in the paint. No injuries have been reported on the toys- the recall is a preemptive measure, the CPSC says. Mattel has ordered an immediate halt to the sale of the toys and asked that they be pulled from the shelves. Additionally, the company is making production changes to prevent future problems and is offering free replacements. The affected toys were produced in China, like 80 percent of toys sold worldwide. Mattel is the world’s largest toy provider.
