In 2004, a landslide brought about by Hurricane Ivan
killed four people, including a pregnant woman in Macon County.
This year, officials are doing something to prevent another tragedy. Surveys are underway in Watauga County to pinpoint trouble spots. The data will help planners decide how to engineer roads and housing developments in order to protect both lives and property. Macon and Buncombe counties are also being surveyed.
