Richard Hamilton, the executive director of the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission resigned yesterday after panel members told him they no longer had confidence in his leadership.

Chief Deputy Director Fred Harris is to serve as interim executive director. Hamilton’s resignation was announced at a specially called meeting on Monday. According to Associated Press reports, Hamilton had no hint of what would transpire at the meeting, but said, “Nothing really surprises me… and I’m okay.” Hamilton had served as executive director since Charles Fullwood’s retirement in September of 2004. Hamilton had worked for the commission for 37 years.
