K-9 Obedience Class Sponsored by The Avery County Sheriff’s Office

Class will be held one night a week for 6 weeks. Classes will start on Tuesday May 1st, 2012 at 6:00 PM and will last until 7:00 PM. Location will be at the Avery County Square. Once completed a certificate of obedience will be given to all handlers and dogs. Class size will be limited; Full Story

'Gerlefest' Rolls into Town, Benefits Humane Society

Appalachian Rollergirls (ARG) will be hosting their first home bout "GERLEFEST,"of their second season in Boone NC on April 28th at 5:00 pm at the Holmes Convocation Center.  ARG is Boone's first and only local female Rollerderby team.  The girls will be bouting against the B-Dazzlers of Charlotte NC. Avery County Penny Challenge for Eagle Habitat

Avery County elementary students collected their loose change March 19 - 30 and brought it to school for the Penny Challenge hosted by the Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation.  The five elementary schools collected a total of $3,745.75, all benefitting the upcoming renovations on the eagle habitats Full Story

Parkway's 8th grade team took first place at the State Finals of Odyssey of the Mind last weekend, sweeping all three components (long-term, style and spontaneous) of the competition.  The team is the first ever from the Watauga County Schools to make it to the World Finals for Odyssey of the Mind Full Story

High Country Bike Plan Survey

High Country Council of Governments is developing a bike plan for Yancey, Mitchell, Avery, Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany, and Wilkes Counties.  The Plan is intended to improve safety, access, and mobility for cyclists by developing a network of designated routes that connect municipalities and other major destinations in the region.
