The Williams YMCA of Avery County visited area schools last week, delivering backpacks filled with school supplies. The backpacks were given to the YMCA as part of the August “Back 2 School” membership drive. For the month of August, The Y waived the joining fee for new members if they brought in a backpack. If someone brought in a backpack filled with school supplies they received a free t-shirt.  ”Last year, we received 8 backpacks to distribute to the elementary schools. This year we doubled the number of backpacks! I am excited that we can help those kids in our area that can’t afford a new backpack or school supplies” Director of Membership, DeLee Scott says.   Trey Oakley, CEO of the Williams YMCA, also wanted to thank everyone that participated . ”The example set by Avery County residents of always being there for those in need is unparalleled, and serves as motivation for the Y to do the same thing.  We are truly blessed to be a part of an amazing community and to have the opportunity to make a positive difference daily in people’s lives.” Oakley also says “We look forward to continuing our mission to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all.  Thank you to everyone that makes what the YMCA does for the community possible.” Would you like to help? The Y is a 501c3 not for profit charity that operates through donated funding, community partnerships and gracious volunteers. Contact us at 828-737-5500 and be a part of your Y!
