After placing first in Cosmetology Skills at the SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Conference, Watauga High School's Sierra Mueller placed 16th in the same competition at the National SkillsUSA Leadership Conference in Kansas City, Missouri in late June. Mueller was competing against students from the continental United States and Alaska as well as Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Her competition included four types of hair styling events and ratings of her performance on seven other factors, including safety, infection control, supplies, official dress, a written professional development exam, a written cosmetology knowledge exam, and an oral communications exam.

The SkillsUSA Championships event is the national-level competition for public high school and college/postsecondary technical students enrolled in career and technical education programs. The Championships are held at the Leadership Conference for state-level gold medalists.  The annual event draws more than 5,600 competitors to 94 separate contests that require the on-site demonstration of career-related technical and leadership skills.
