In its monthly meeting, the Newland Business Association celebrated health, holding its meeting at Cannon Memorial with a program about the Williams YMCA. This nonprofit charter Y was built to serve every resident of Avery County, providing life changing programs and services that enrich people from all walks of life. The Y staff thanked the generosity of donors, the Avery County Commissioners, and the people of Avery County, so that no one is turned away. Outreach ‘Y’ programs make formally immobile elderly residents mobile again, with other programs including diabetes prevention, obesity, wellness programs, and more. The Williams Y works with hospitals, schools the health department to combat disease in Avery County. There is a Youth Development program that teaches every 2nd grader in Avery County to swim, as the Y promotes healthy living, and social responsibility. Their goal is to touch as many non members as members, with over 3100 members who take advantage of all the Y has to offer. The Y employs 60 people of Avery County and they are committed to improving life in Avery County. The members of the NBA were treated to a video narrated by Jim Greene of WECR radio showing how the Y has changed people's lives. Every month, a sponsor will host the monthly meeting of the NBA which is held on the 3rd Tuesday of the month.
