BOONE, NC - Stretching from Grandfather Mountain to Kingsport, Tenn., the Watauga River is a valuable resource to thousands of people and countless animal populations. The Watauga River Partners’ Picnic in the Park is an opportunity for the community to learn about the Watauga River and ways to protect and preserve it. The Picnic in the Park will take place July 16 at Valle Crucis Park, in Valle Crucis, N.C., from 5 to 8 p.m.
The Picnic in the Park features music, educational activities for children, and information for those concerned about the future of the Watauga River. Roots-rock band the Worthless Son-In-Laws will perform at the beginning and conclusion of the event. Guest speaker Kristan Cockerill will talk about North Carolina’s High Country water resources.
Demonstrations of the Enviroscape and an aquatic bug station will be available during the Picnic at the Park. These two activities have been popular with not just children, but adults also, at past Watauga River Partners events. The aquatic bug stations will allow attendees to see, touch, and learn about creek critters, while the Enviroscape model shows how life on land affects life in the waters.
Valle Crucis Park, the site of Picnic in the Park, provides beautiful views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, river access, walking trails, a playground for children. Frequented by thousands during the Summer months, the Valle Crucis Park is an excellent place to enjoy a picnic and music. Tributaries of the Watauga River run through the park, making it an appropriate venue to showcase the Watauga River.
The Watauga River Partners Picnic in the Park is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own picnic. There are stationary grills available at Valle Crucis Park for those interested in cooking out.

About the Watauga River Partners:
The Watauga River Partners formed in 1999 as a chapter of the Western North Carolina Alliance in response to the growing pressures on the water quality of the Watauga River and its tributaries. The purpose of the organization is to educate the community about the Watauga River and to promote conservation and rehabilitation of the river. Watuaga River Partners’ efforts to protect the Watauga River serve communities along the 60-mile stretch of river. The Watauga River is perhaps the most outstanding natural resource of the North Carolina High Country, where it is a center for outdoor recreation, a site of scientific research, a fragile ecosystem that is home to endangered species of aquatic life, a source of high-quality water, and a contributor to local and regional economies.
