 The Watauga High men's soccer team won its fourth game in a row with a 7-2 win against McDowell in the second-round of the Catawba Tournament Tuesday night in Morganton. Tucker Chasteen, who battled a back injury last season, led
the way with three goals. Logan Raichle chipped in with a goal and two assists; Alex Parsons scored in his fourth consecutive game, giving him a team-high six goals this season.
"It's so good to see Tucker back out there playing," said WHS coach Woody McKay. "He's a very good skilled player, and he was a real weapon for us tonight. But we had a good balanced attack. It was a good team win."
The win moves WHS into the finals Thursday night. Cam Linnville and Patrick Williamson each had a goal for the Pioneers (4-0); Canyon Meuller, Trey Ollis and Callin Kreis-Potgieter had one assist apiece. The JV team entertains McDowell tonight at 5 p.m.
WHS Volleyball Knocks Off Lake Norman
The Watauga High volleyball team bounced back from last week's disappointing loss at North Surry with a 3-1 win at Lake Norman. The win also avenged a loss against the Wildcats in the Class 4A Sectional Finals at Lentz-Eggers Gym in 2010. The Pioneers (2-1) defeated Lake Norman 27-25, 26-24, 22-25, 25-10. Kristen Carter led the way with 34 assists; Channing Hagaman had 21 kills, three aces and 21 digs.
"It's nice to pick up a win in Charlotte," said WHS coach Kris Hagaman. "These are the teams we usually face in the state playoffs, so coming her with a young team and winning, is huge for our confidence."
Rebecca Hayes had 18 kills and six blocks; Ashlyn Van Dyke had 38 digs and three aces; Emily Hinshaw had 23 digs and five aces. Unfortunately, the JV team (2-1) suffered its first loss of the year. Lake Norman prevailed in three game: 16-25, 25-23, 25-27. Sarah Combs had another strong game with 18 assists and five aces; Kinley McCoury had six kills and a block; Blake Byrd had four kills and ten digs; Bridget McKinney had 15 digs. The Pioneers take on Ashe County in their home opener today at Lentz-Eggers Gym.
WHS Netters Nip Reagan
The Watauga High women's tennis team pulled out another close one last night with a 5-4 win against Pfafftown-Reagan at the Sports Complex. And similar to Monday night, the No.2 doubles team of Hannah Petersen and Emily Burwell won the match for WHS. Petersen and Burwell knocked off Montse Mesalles and China Brown 10-3.
"Emily and Hannah have been solid for us, that's for sure," said WHS coach Anna DeChellis. "Two nights in a row, those two have pulled us through."
Meredith Smith, Petersen and Burwell were also victorious in singles play. Smith and Nicole Fox picked up a win at No.1 doubles. Savannah Copeland and Taylor Paige; Kylie Winkelmann and Gab Neufeld; Jessica Benyon and Addie Hall all won their exhibition matches. The Pioneers (3-0) begin Northwestern 3A/4A Conference play today at home against Hickory. The match begins at 4 p.m.

WOLVERINES CRUISE IN SEASON-OPENING WIN
Steve Breitenstein won his head-coaching debut Tuesday night as the Watauga Middle School football team defeated Avery 28-14 at Jack Groce Stadium. The Wolverines (1-0) scored all of their points in the first half. They also had two touchdowns called back because of penalty. Evan Suggs scored three rushing touchdowns and a two-point conversion; Justin Hollars returned a punt for a touchdown and he scored on a two-point conversion. Nose guard Emory Wallace and linebacker Case Taylor were standouts on defense.
